Mary Allen dedication

The large boulder at the recreational facility along Sarah Sanford Road, a popular landmark for Bridgewater residents young and old, has been engraved in honor of Mary Allen. A dedication ceremony will be held Saturday at 11 a.m., immediately followed by refreshments at the Hilltop Farm Senior Center.

Once dubbed "the Grand Lady of Recreation" in Bridgewater, Mary J. Allen was a lifelong resident. A charter member of the Recreation Commission, she served for 30 years on the board. Mrs. Allen was a determined advocate of open space and played a central role in the acquisition of the land preserved for the recreation facility. She devoted countless hours of research to the development of the pavilion and was often found there enjoying the grounds. In 2000, she was honored as Bridgewater's "Person of the Century."
