The Moonlight Run 5K enjoyed a memorable run for 15 years, through last spring, as a popular recreational venue for thousands of Greater New Milford-area athletes.

Enter the New Milford Twilight Run in 2012.

Stepping in June 1 in the Moonlight Run's stead, the new event, over basically the same course, proved itself a worthy successor to Wallie John's venerable event.

The race was staged by Breakaway Sports Event Management, with start and finish at Young's Field in New Milford.

Cloudy skies greeted the nearly 600 runners as they toed the line for the race's debut run. Once the starter's gun had fired, everything clicked.

It helped that the winner was local product Craig Hunt, 21, a New Milford High School graduate who sped quickly away from his competition to finish in an impressive 14:36. His 42-second margin of victory was duly cheered by the hundreds of fans as he kicked to the finish line on Young's Field.

Washington teens Andy Pullaro and Logan Ross distinguished themselves with respective third- and fifth-place efforts.

The women's champion was Mary Dolan Zengo, 46, of Wilton, in 18:10.

Greater New Milford-area residents who claimed divisional titles:

Nicole McCarthy, 14, of New Milford, won the women's 14 and younger division in 20:53.

Sofia Amaral, 16, of New Milford, won the women's 15-19 division in 20:17.

Theresa Krebs, 43, of Roxbury, won the women's 40-49 division in 19:37.

Don Tutson, of New Milford, won the men's 40-49 division in 17:37.

John Richers, of Bridgewater, won the men's 50-59 division in 19:12.

Stephen Randolph, of New Milford, won the men's 60 and older division in 23:28.

Race proceeds will benefit the New Milford High School boys' and girls' cross-country teams.

"This is a great opportunity for the Greater New Milford community," said Breakaway's Kevin Curley, the race director. "And we are very excited to have the opportunity to put this event on."
