Logan Ross lived up to his billing and fellow Shepaug Valley High athletes rose to the occasion May 26 at the Berkshire League track and field championship meet.
Ross outlegged his rivals comfortably to win the boys' 3,200-meter run in 10:06.3 to claim the Spartans' only individual first place of the day.
Coach Tom Scarola's Region 12 boys' 4x400 relay also deadlocked Nonnewaug to share first place at 3:38.7.
Peyton Kay distinguished himself by earning second place in the javelin and third in the shot put, while Lucas Guliano placed in both hurdling finals.
The Spartans overall tied Lewis Mills for fifth place with 50 points. Nonnewaug cruised to the team title with 176.
In girls' competition, coach Michael Hall's Spartans placed eighth of 10 teams with 15 points as Nonnewaug also captured distaff laurels with its overwhelming 224- point show.

The Spartans were set last week to send a crew of athletes to the state Class S meet. Top qualifiers from the meet would be eligible for the state open meet and possibly this weekend's New Engand competition.
Region 12's state-eligible athletes were Lucas Guliano (110 and 300 hurdles); Peyton Kay (javelin, shot put); Dylan McAward (800); Logan Ross (800, 1,600 and 3,200); Ben Steers (pole vault); Brendan Welsh (3,200); Adrienne Fedyna-Dembeck (400, 800 and triple jump); Hannah Redstone (3,200); and Kaitlyn Smith (400).
