Spartans make their mark in Berkshire track

Published 6:59 pm, Wednesday, June 6, 2012

  • Lucas Guliano of the Shepaug Valley High School boys' track and field team wouldn't let such a small thing as a hurdle impede him as he competed May 18, 2012 with his teammates in the Berkshire League championship meet at Litchfield High. The Spartan girls were there, too, and both Region 12 teams made their mark. For the story and more photos, see next week's Spectrum and check www.newmilfordspectrum.com. Photo: Norm Cummings

Logan Ross lived up to his billing and fellow Shepaug Valley High athletes rose to the occasion May 26 at the Berkshire League track and field championship meet.

Ross outlegged his rivals comfortably to win the boys' 3,200-meter run in 10:06.3 to claim the Spartans' only individual first place of the day.

Coach Tom Scarola's Region 12 boys' 4x400 relay also deadlocked Nonnewaug to share first place at 3:38.7.

Peyton Kay distinguished himself by earning second place in the javelin and third in the shot put, while Lucas Guliano placed in both hurdling finals.

The Spartans overall tied Lewis Mills for fifth place with 50 points. Nonnewaug cruised to the team title with 176.

In girls' competition, coach Michael Hall's Spartans placed eighth of 10 teams with 15 points as Nonnewaug also captured distaff laurels with its overwhelming 224- point show.
