Student-athletes from the traditionally strong Shepaug Valley High School sports program earned plaudits June 7 during the school's annual athletic awards ceremony.

Highlighting the evening before a near-capacity crowd was the introduction of Logan Ross, Bridget McCarthy and Kate DeWitte as the recipients of Region 12's top individual sports awards.

Bridget and Kate share the Joseph Babcock Award as the most accomplished girl athlete over the past four years while Logan claimed the Charles McGinnis Award as the top boy athlete.

Jessica Dumas and Ellery Rourk took their bows in recognition of their CIAC state scholar-athlete laurels.

Among the team distinctions noted during the two-hour plus program were sportsmanship honors bestowed on the Spartan field hockey, boys' soccer, boys' basketball and ice hockey squads.

Spartan athletes earned a cumulative 132-113-5 record for their 16 varsity teams during the 2012-13 campaign, led by boys' tennis' 16-3 ledger, golf's 16-4 record and a 14-4 record for the swimmers and divers

Early in the evening, Shepaug graduate Jill Linder, a Washington resident, was honored as the school's 21st recipient of the Friend of Shepaug service award.

Among her contributions to the Region 12 community are service as a Washington ambulance volunteer and firefighter, as well as her long service as a bus driver.
