Shepaug Valley High School was recently honored as one of 17 high school athletic programs in the state selected as Michaels Achievement Cup exemplary programs.

The Region 12 school was recognized for its outstanding achievement as an overall athletics program for the 2012-13 academic year.

Also feted were Bloomfield, Brookfield, Bunnell, Cheshire, Daniel Hand, East Catholic, East Hampton, Fairfield Ludlowe, Gilbert, Haddam-Killingworth, Ledyard, Lyman Memorial, Northwestern, Notre Dame-Fairfield, Sacred Heart and Weston.

The 17 schools represent all six school size classifications and are selected based on achievement in sportsmanship, participation, athletic scholarship, athletic personnel, equity, chemical free initiatives and athletic achievement.

"CAS-CIAC is thrilled to recognize the efforts of these 17 schools in providing an outstanding, education-based athletics program," CAS-CIAC Executive Director Karissa Niehoff said. "These schools have demonstrated consistent dedication to offering a well-rounded athletics program, consistent with the mission of the CIAC.

"They should be lauded for their exhaustive efforts and dedication to bringing a positive athletics experience to their students and communities."

Shepaug has often been honored as the state's top small school in the Michaels Achievement Cup competitition since the program began in the 1980s.
