The litany of success etched by Shepaug Valley High field hockey over the decades is rich and proud.

Legendary coach Joan Gauthey and Jaye Alex Stuart, one of her players in the 1970s, have combined over the last half century to guide the Spartans to countless Berkshire League titles and a couple of state championships.

The Region 12 girls had fallen on tougher times in recent years, but the 2014 squad showed there's still plenty of life in Shepaug Valley field hockey.

The Spartans posted a 7-8-1 record during the regular season to earn a 15th seed in the state Class S tournament.

There, coach Stuart's stickgirls eased by 18th-ranked Northwestern 3-1 in a Nov. 3 playdown match before suffering elimination 4-0 the next afternoon to second-ranked Stonington.

Among those contributing their talents to the Shepaug cause this fall were Claire Caco, Alyssa Cicio, Jackie Doerwald, Marriah Fischetti, Rachel Genua, Alexis Guilbeault, Brenda Guttierez, Giana Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Paige Johnson, Tierney Kovacs, Olivia Moore, Haley Pesce, Maribeth Seeger, Kaitlyn Smith, Emily Taylor, Dimity Wanag, Molly Mercier, Rachel Crossley, Grace Thermer, Olivia Cody, Sadie Fleming, Sierra Soletsky and Alex Darinzo.
