Hanna White is a young woman with an entrepreneurial spirit and business savvy beyond her years.

The 20-year-old Litchfield resident has opened her first business, Ryders Sports Consignment, in the Marble Dale district of Washington.

The shop is located across the New Milford Turnpike (Route 202) from the White Horse Country Pub.

Ryders offers sports enthusiasts a chance to buy brand-name, gently used and new sports gear at reasonable prices.

The shop also offers top consignment percentages for sports gear brought into the store for resale.

"It's very expensive to buy brand-new sports equipment," Ms. White explained, "and, if you have a child who wants to try out a sport, but you're not sure he or she will stick with it, consignment buying is a great way to go."

"Or if your child has outgrown his or her gear with the new season coming up," she added, "you can bring the old equipment in for resale and find the size you need."

An avid sportswoman herself, Ms. White can be found during her non-work hours on the ski slopes or snowboarding, horseback riding, showing her horses or attending a sporting event.

"The whole consignment, recycled idea inspired me to open the shop," she said. "I'm very particular about what we take in. We have new inventory coming in regularly."

A Northface jacket that would sell for $140 can be found in the shop for $40 or $50, Ms. White said.

From a baby hiking pack to a toddler-sized ski jacket to women's figure skates to tennis racquets, Ryders strives to meet the needs of the whole family, she said.

Taylor Komisar went to Ryders' grand opening in November. She was impressed with "how clean and bright the store was."

"I felt like it was a high-end sports store," Ms. Komisar said. "I brought in my snow shoes for consignment and they sold in about a week, very fast."

"It's worth the drive from Goshen, where I live. I bought a Land's End vest there," Ms. Komisar said. "I'll be going back. I saw online that she has bathing suits in and I'm taking in my field hockey equipment to sell."

With early February, Ryders is accepting spring sports gear.

"I will have a kayak, gear for most team field sports," Ms. White said, "and water sports, and golf and biking equipment."

Ryders Sports Consignment, at 255 New Milford Turnpike (Route 202) in Marble Dale, offers winter hours Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
