The track and field exploits of Shepaug Valley High's Logan Ross and Peyton Kay climaxed recently with strong performances in Berkshire League and state competition.

Ross posted respective 10th- and 13th-place performances in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at the June 3 State Open meet at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

The Spartan senior clocked a career-best 1:56.83 in the 800 and added a 4:27.43 at 1,600 meters to achieve his strong finishes among the best runner in Connecticut.

Ross previously had won the state Class S title in the 800 in 1:57.84 and claimed third in a personal best 4:19.63 in the 1,600.

The Spartan standout also had won the Berkshire League 1,600 in 4:22.45 in a stirring battle with Lewis Mills' Jonah Riolo May 18 at Litchfield High.

Peyton Kay highlighted his Spartan career at the Berkshire League meet with wins in both the shot put at 47 feet, 3 inches and the javelin at 169-2.

He placed third in the javelin and fifth in the shot put at the state Class S meet, and closed the books on his Region 12 sports career placing 21st in the shot put and 14th in the javelin at the State Open.

Coach Jim Lowe's Spartan boys were sixth in the Berkshire League meet with 46 points, and coach Mike Hall's girls were eighth with 34.5 points.

Third-place finishes by the girls' 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays were among the high points for the Spartan girls in Litchfield.

At the Class S meet, Ross and Kay led the Shepaug boys to 10th place with 27 points.
