NEW FAIRFIELD — With postseason tournaments rapidly approaching, several state powerhouses competed in the 12-team New Fairfield Duals Saturday morning with a chance to stake their claim as the best in the state.

The main event was a battle between the top-ranked teams in the state coaches’ poll in No. 1 Danbury vs. No. 2 New Milford and it came after both schools got through the rest of the field undefeated with relative ease.

Then the Hatters posted a decisive 43-16 victory over the Green Wave, a clash that was highlighted by Danbury’s Ben Leblanc and New Milford’s Brandon Leonard putting on a clinic at 106 in a match that was ultimately won 3-2 by Leblanc.

“It was awesome,” Danbury coach Ricky Shook said. “We avenged some matches we lost at the Holiday Tournament. It all worked out. Leblanc and Kyle Fields lost to both those (New Milford) kids at the Holiday Tournament, so that shows we’re getting better.”

Andrew Marquis, Solomon James and Michael Gaboardi notched three consecutive pins for the Hatters against the Green Wave.

“Fantastic tournament,” New Milford coach Chris Piel said. “It’s the best of the best in this room and it’s nice to see where we’re at and what we need to work on. It’s a good wake-up call for some of my guys.”

The Green Wave got their morning off to a great start with a statement win over Newtown, 53-22.

New Milford grapplers that claimed pinfall victories against Newtown included Brandon Leonard at 106, Colin Lindner at 113, Mel Ortiz at 120, Evan Colley at 132, CJ Schultz at 138 and Brett Leonard at 160.

Danbury also breezed past its morning competition, topping Londonberry (N.H.) 52-12 and besting Nonnewaug 69-6.

New Milford posted a 48-18 victory over Bristol Eastern in the semis, as Brandon Leonard at 106, Colin Lindner at 113, Tyler Schultz at 126, Evan Colley at 132, Bryan Rojas at 145 and Brett Leonard at 160 all won via pin.

“I think Tyler Schultz probably had one of the best days today,” Piel said. “He really beat a tough kid from Newtown and he just beat Joey Hulse and those are two very talented wrestlers. CJ Schultz also had a great day. And our go to guys like Rojas and Brett Leonard always step up. (Danbury) was more aggressive than we were.”

Danbury punched its ticket to the championship by scoring a 50-24 win over New Fairfield in the semifinals.

Winning by pin for the Hatters were Ben Leblanc at 106, Jakob Camacho at 112, Joey Hulse at 126, Peterson Souza at 132 and Matt Adam at 182.

“We just had to win the matches we already lost,” Danbury’s Kyle Fields said. “Ben and me lost at the Holiday Tournament and then we came back and won. It was good.”

New Fairfield went 2-0 in its round robin games, claiming wins over Wilton and Fitch by scores of 57-24 and 57-18.

“We won five matches against Danbury, which was good,” New Fairfield coach Paul Musso said. “We only have two losses and we’ve lost to the number one and number two team in the state, so that’s not that bad.”

But the day ultimately belonged to the Hatters.

“We’re not done yet,” Shook said. “We’ve got to finish our season hopefully undefeated and then we’ve got FCIAC, double Ls and the Open. Here we go.”
