The gymnastics career of Carla Hernandez at New Milford High School is closing in style.

The Green Wave senior was named recently to represent the state in May at the national high school meet.

Coach Bethany Mihaly's NMHS girls squad recently lowered the curtain on a busy campaign with Carla Hernandez and Alison Profeta capping the Green Wave efforts by participating in the state open meet.

Competing at home at NMHS, Carla placed third at 9.425 in floor exercise, sixth on balance beam at 9.025, 11th on uneven bars at 8.95 and 17th in vault at 8.85 to finish seventh all-around with 36.35 points.

Alison scored 9.15 for 10th in floor exercise, 8.3 on beam for 18th, 8.45 for 20th on bars and 8.745 for 21st on vault for a 15th-place all-around mark of 34.625.

Carla's efforts earned her a spot in the March 16 New England meet, during which she fared well with a fourth place at 9.425 on beam and an eighth at 9.25 in floor exercise.

Earlier in the season, the Green Wave had placed fourth as a team in the South-West Conference meet at NMHS and finished sixth at the state Class M meet at Pomperaug High in Southbury.

Among the highlights in the Class M meet were Carla Hernandez' 9.6 on the bars -- "she absolutely nailed it," said her coach -- and performed well enough elsewhere to total 37.75 all-around.

Alison Profeta, Ashley O'Berry, Julia Krier and Erica Davvidson also competed that day for the Green Wave.

"I was very proud of our girls in all the post-season meets," praised coach Mihaly. "These are great kids and I love working with them."

The future appears solid for the Green Wave, too, as Alison Profeta, Ashley O'Berry and Erica Davidson are expected to present a formidable nucleus for the 2012-13 squad.

Seniors competing for the Green Wave for a final time this season are Allison Cheng, Rachael Dobies, Carla Hernandez and Brice Schrenkel.
