Hopes were high at mid-season that 2015 might prove a winning campaign for New Milford High School girls' tennis.

Coach Deirdre Burke's court crew had just defeated Notre Dame of Fairfield, 7-0, on April 30. With a 4-5 ledger, a plus W-L ledger seemed in the offing.

However, the Green Wave then proceeded to lose to six straight South-West Conference net rivals.

As coach Burke and Co. headed this week into its final matches, the NMHS girls simply were striving to regain their winning touch at least one more time.

They accomplished that Wednesday when they outplayed visiting Stratford, 5-2, to improve their record to 5-11.

"The team's record does not reflect the amount of work the girls have put in this season," said coach Burke. "It also does not show how far they have progressed since the beginning of the year. I am very proud of the way the girls continued to improve."

The team mentor especially noted the contributions of her seniors.

"Sam McNally, Amanda Aguayo, Sarah Coshal and Sarah Dengler have been excellent leaders," said coach Burke, "and a driving positive force on our team. I have an amazing group of talented, young athletes."

The Green Wave is set to finish up the regular season Friday, May 15 vs. non-league foe Lewis Mills, upstate in Burlington.
