A fifth-place finish at the New England championship meet Nov. 10 in Cumberland, Maine closed the books on the 2011 season for coach Chris Bacich's New Milford High boys' cross country team.

The Green Wave, eight days removed from its memorable run to a state open title in Manchester, showed the way for its fellow Connecticut teams during competition over a five-kilometer course at Twin Brook Recreation Park.

Coach Bacich's pack was led by Ryan Clarke and John Hansell, NMHS' senior captains.

The team's frontrunners throughout a strong season clocked 17:03 and 17:11.2, respectively, to place 30th and 41st in the elite field.

They were followed by Green Wave underclassmen Zach Guptill (90th, 17:47.8), Hugh Sichel (106th, 17:56.6), Jay Humphreys (146th, 18:14.8), Adam Dengler (175th, 18:31.3) and Greg Hansell (198th, 18:45.8).

Newtown, which in October ended the Green Wave's 10-year skein as champion of the South-West Conference, finished sixth in the team standings, led by SWC individual champion John Feinstein's fourth-place effort.

Shepaug Valley High senior Logan Ross placed 161st in 18:22.9.
