Banners and plaques are oft-times the end-of-season result for perennially strong New Milford High School field hockey.

Coach Dawn Hough's Green Wave didn't enjoy the heights of success achieved by many of its predecessors this autumn, but the 2013 edition will well remember its close calls.

The NMHS girls closed the books Nov. 6 on an overall 8-6-5 campaign.

The 12th-seeded Green Wave won its state Class L tournament debut, 1-0, Nov. 4 over visiting Norwalk, but bowed out two days later in the Round of 16 when fifth-ranked Glastonbury outlasted the local stickgirls, 2-0.

Coach Hough and company had previously posted a 6-4-5 regular season record, highighted by a 1-1 deadlock with unbeaten Lauralton Hall.

The Green Wave then dispatched Bethel, 1-0, in the South-West Conference quarterfinals before losing a 1-0 overtime rematch with top-seeded Lauralton Hall in the SWC semifinals.

For the 19-match season, New Milford scored 20 goals while permitting only 16.

The season's end lowered the curtain on the Green Wave field hockey careers of seniors Sara Artese, Florentina Ceconi, Kelsey Fuchs, Corinne Heymach, Meghan Lacey, Denise Landry, Lauren McLachlan, Lauren Montaruli, Sam Quinn and Emilie Zarba
