The Green Wave holds fate in its own hands.

State tournament qualification now safely tucked away, the New Milford High School girls' softball team now sets its sights on a South-West Conference playoff bid.

Coach Eileen Holden's diamond squad ripped overmatched Stratford, 17-3, Monday to improve its overall record to 8-8, thus earning the requisite eight wins to gain a coveted state class `LL' tournament spot.

Heading into games with Brookfield Wednesday at NMHS and Masuk Thursday in Monroe, Holden and Co. owned a 7-4 ledger in SWC action.

"We had some tough losses during the middle of our season," reflected coach Holden, who has guided her team to the post-seaso throughout her NMHS tenure. "We hope to get back on track after our win against Stratford."

The Green Wave will close the regular season next week vs. Notre Dame Monday at NMHS and at Bethel Tuesday. Both are games, the local girls would hope to win.

"If we play good defense, run smart and aggressive, and put the ball in play," said Holden. "We could end the season on a high note."
