The United Way of Western Connecticut is seeking sponsors for its 19th annual Back to School Clothing Drive.

Donations will be accepted through Aug. 13.

The program provides new school clothes for children living in New Milford, Kent, Washington, Roxbury, Sherman, Bridgewater and Warren.

"At this time, we only have enough sponsors to support two-thirds of the children identified as in need," said Kathy Thomas, the program coordinator.

"As we had anticipated, more families continue to be in need of help this year due to the economy," she said. "In fact, last year we experienced a 35 percent increase in children sponsored."

The social service administrators from area towns and agencies determine eligibility and provide information on families who need assistance.

The program's goal is for each child to receive two sets of clothing (pants and shirts), sneakers or shoes, a coat, socks, underwear, a backpack, school supplies and personal care items.

Sponsors may sign up to clothe an entire child, join a group of individuals sponsoring a child or make a donation toward the program.

Sponsors will receive a list of clothing sizes and specific items needed.

Clothing may be dropped off starting Monday at Webster Bank at 19 Main St. in New Milford.
