In recent years, he competed in triathlons and completed three Iron Man competitions. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughter, Montannah, of Austin, Texas; a sister, Teri Smith, of Sandy Hook; a niece, Alison Fernand, and a nephew, Matthew Fernand; and several aunts and uncles.

In recent years she worked as a food service manager for the Ridgefield schools. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her five children, John Northrop Jr., of New Milford; Jason Northrop, of Waterford; Pearle Northrop, of Natick, Mass.; and William Reiske and Sara Reiske, both of Danbury; six grandchildren; and four siblings:

Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford. Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford was in charge of the arrangements.

Upon retirement in 1991, he and Carolyn moved to Warren, where they gardened, volunteered in community activities, and served as horticultural therapists at the Lutheran Home in Southbury. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Karen Brau, and her husband, Ed Miller, of Washington, D.C.; a son, David Brau, and his wife, Maureen, of Hendersonville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Sam and Hannah Miller, and Sarah and Jack Brau; and a brother, Richard Brau, and his wife, Anne, of North Carolina. The four-week summer day camp at the church will be attended by children from the neighborhood elementary school, all of whom receive free or reduced-price lunch.
