To the Editor:
The future of our American democracy depends on the strength of our religious institutions.
There is danger that our great nation is losing its religious underpinnings with the advancement of secularism and its effort to ignore and therefore, to reject the religious heritage inspired by our Founding Fathers.
The American principles of democracy-respect for personal and national freedom, order, justice and the respect for the dignity of the human person needs to be protected and defended by all of us.
Indeed, religion is an integral part of the American fabric.
To eradicate it would mean to destroy the very foundation of our country.
The society that excludes religion totally from its life, that seems to regard religion as something from which public life must be, is bound to foster the impression that religion is either irrelevant or harmful.
We would do well to remember that "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."
Our individual efforts to make America better will only be successful to the extent that we maintain our religious and moral values.
Where are you going, America?
