[Editor's Note: The following is an open letter from Mayor Patricia Murphy to those involved in New Milford's recognition of Korean War veterans.]

I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to the many people involved in making the Oct. 21 New Milford Korean War veterans recognition ceremony so successful.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz has worked diligently to recognize the service and sacrifices of the many brave men and women throughout the state. I wish to thank her for taking the time to honor New Milford's servicemen.

A special thank you goes out the young men from Cub Scout Pack 158 and Boy Scout Troop 58.

Walter Coffey, the Cub Scout Pack 58 den leader, and Pack 58 Webelo Thomas King offered their time and services to the event.

Brian McDonald, assistant scoutmaster for Troop 58, was joined by scouts Danny McDonald, senior patrol leader; Michael Piper, assistant senior patrol leader; Christopher Sweet, troop guide, and Dan Sheehan, patrol leader, all representing Boy Scout Troop 58.

Each of these leaders and scouts arrived in full class uniform to escort our Korean War veterans into the auditorium for the ceremony

They were well received and truly helped to make this event special.

As the veterans arrived, they were graciously serenaded by the talent of Mr. Pat Maguire on bagpipes.

We began our ceremony with Curtis Thompson singing the National Anthem and an invocation given by Rev. Bob McGrath.

State Rep. Clark Chapin offered words of gratitude and appreciation.

We heard some wonderful stories and were honored to see these veterans share their pride for their country. All together, we were able to recognize more than 50 Korean War veterans as their neighbors, friends and family stood by.

Bank Street Theater was very generous with a donation of popcorn and treat bags enjoyed after the ceremony with the beverages provided and served by the Maxx. They were a welcome treat to complete the afternoon.

The event was a great success.

I am honored to have been able to acknowledge our New Milford Korean War veterans for their dedication, sacrifices and service.

A very special thank you goes out to those men and women, as we enjoy everything we have today because of you. This event was a proud day for New Milford.

Thank you.

Patricia Murphy
