A juvenile suspect has been arrested and charged with third-degree arson relating to the Sept. 3 carport fire along Wellsville Avenue in New Milford.

Police did not release the youth's name or gender.

The suspect was interviewed the evening of the fire, subsequently charged and released on a written promise to appear, police said.

A court date of Sept. 16 has been set for appearance before Danbury juvenile court.

The six-bay carport was leveled by the blaze, which ignited two propane tanks stored in the building, fire marshal Karen Facey said. The blasts were the result of the fire, not the cause of it.

No vehicles were in the garage at the time.

The car port appeared to have been used mostly for storage of furniture, Facey said, and other items from residents of an adjacent, multi-family home.

Firefighters from Water Witch Hose Co. No. 2 arrived within minutes of the 5:13 p.m. 911 call and hosed down the smoldering remains of the car port.

No injuries were reported.

According to Vision Appraisal, the property at numbers 8 and 10 Wellsville Avenue are owned by JAAG Properties.
