Winifed Smith, 97, lived in Marble Dale

Winifed E. "Winnie" Smith, 97, of Marble Dale, died May 2 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She was the widow of William "Bill" Smith.

Mrs. Smith was born March 1, 1915, in Bridgeport, daughter of the late Salvatore H. Forte and Lois LaBrague.

She was employed by Bantam Electronics, the White Memorial Foundation in Bantam, Berkshire Transformer in New Milford for 25 years, and most recently, by the Nestle Co. as manager of the company store, retiring in 1999 at the age of 84.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Palm Rebekah Lodge 43 in New Milford for more than 40 years, and held the titles of past Noble Grand and secretary emeritus.

She was also active in the Rebekah Assembly of Connecticut, and held a variety of offices. She was also a member of Devotion LEA No. 5 in New Milford.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Congregational Church of New Milford.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce W. Ward, and her husband, Thomas, of New Milford; a son, Warren W. Smith, and his wife, Bonnie, of New Milford; two sisters, Euginia Veccharino, and her husband, Joe, of Danbury, and Barbara Varley, of Washington; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

The Colonial Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
