The majority of us probably give very little thought to the roads we drive on and the bridges we drive across. But Lindsey Chatfield, of New Milford, gives much thought to bridges, especially the one he helped build in town. In the above photo by Jack Muckstadt, published in The Advertiser in 1983, Chatfield, right, then an employee with the New Milford Public Works Department, uses an earth- packing machine to pack the fill behind the new abutment on the Sand Road Bridge. The bridge was completed in the fall of 1983 and some work has been done to it over the years. Chatfield said he would like to see the bridge preserved and listed as an historical element in town.
