Dominic Perachi edged fellow fifth-grader Bridget Snyder recently to claim first place in Washington Primary School's edition of the National Geographic geography bee.

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 watched as the competition had been narrowed down to the two finalists, both representing Caroline Calhoun's class.

Principal Emily Judd, in just her fourth day at WPS, served as moderator.

Dominic Perachi will now take a one-hour, written test to qualify for state competition on March 30.
