Walter F. Michalek, 86, of New Milford, died Jan. 5, 2011, at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Kathleen (Fetcho) Michalek.

Mr. Michalek was born Dec. 10, 1924, in New Milford, son of the late Paul and Sophia (Gabrys) Michalek.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

Mr. Michalek was employed by Nestle's Food Co. in the maintenance department for 33 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church and a member of Knights of Columbus Housatonic Council #40 of New Milford.

Mr. Michalek was also a member of American Legion Ezra Woods Post #31, VFW Post 1672, and Water Witch Hose Company No. 2.

In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by a son, Ron J. Michalek, and his wife, Charlene, of New Milford; a sister, Dorothy DeCosa, of New Milford; two granddaughters, Rhonda Michalek and Stella Vochis, and her husband, Michael; two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Nicholas Vochis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Michalek and Fred Michalek; and two sisters, Helen Babiyan and Blanche Babiyan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today (Friday), Jan. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in New Milford.

Burial will take place in the spring at St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford.

The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford is in charge of arrangements.
