WASHINGTON — Region 12 School Board member Valerie Andersen was given a warm sendoff this week after serving on the board for two decades.
Over her tenure, she saw two daughters graduate from Region 12 and was a fiscal force of nature as School Board treasurer whose quick wit and ad libs often brought laughs in otherwise contentious board meetings.
In a brief goodbye, her quips brought laughs again.
“God made the idiot,” Andersen said, abridging a Mark Twain quote. “And then he made the School Board.”
“(Twain) couldn’t be more right,” she added.
Andersen’s estimated that 2,500 students have had a Region 12 education under her watch.
“I would hope we did something good for those students,” she said.
Board Chair Jim Hirschfield, who joined the board with Andersen in 1997, thanked her for her service.
“She has always been a tireless advocate for children,” he said.
Andersen, unseated in a heavily contested election this spring, has said she still plans to stay involved.
