To the Editor:

I have been a resident of Region 12 for 23 years (five years in Roxbury and 18 in New Preston).

My husband and I choose to make our home here in Region 12 because of its community spirit and its school system.

Today, we have three children in Region 12, one at each school level.

As a parent, one of the primary goals and what I have to truly believe is also the primary goal and the responsibility of our community is the education of our children.

Just as those before us did for us; it is now our responsibility to do the same in turn, and they will do for others in the future.

Before us on April 29 is the opportunity to do what is best for our entire Region 12 community, an opportunity to enhance, upgrade and improve our already valuable education system, with a single unified elementary school at the Shepaug Valley Middle/High School campus.

A single, unified elementary school makes the most sense educationally and financially. Plus, by coming together, our sense of community would be strengthened. We would still have the same great children, educators, administrators and parents.

A new, to-code facility, a secure, state-of-the-art security system and a resource officer on campus, equally proportioned class sizes, continuity among students, continuity among teacher, all special services staff in one place, all multi-media resources in one building and a daily food program would better meet the needs of our children, academically, environmentally and socially.

Now is the time to come together as a true community and vote yes, to give our children, all our children, the best we can.
