BEEKMAN, N.Y. -- A 20-year-old New Milford man and a 17-year-old girl from the Gaylordsville section of New Milford were rescued by police and firefighters Saturday after they became lost on the Appalachian Trail.

The pair, whose names were not released by police, were able to contact the Dutchess County (N.Y.) Police Department by cell phone and gave limited information about their location somewhere in Beekman or Pawling, N.Y.

The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, along with members of the Beekman and Union Vale fire departments, responded.

Two teams were established to search the trails with thermal imaging cameras, night-vision goggles and a K-9 Unit.

One of the teams found the hikers uninjured on a trail about 1 1/2 miles from the north side of Route 55 in Beekman, and they were escorted to safety.
