Trees on Green are ‘beautiful’

The New Milford Mayor’s Office has issued a note of thanks to the New Milford United Methodist Church’s Men’s Club.
“A heartfelt thank you [to the club] for the beautiful, live Christmas trees on the Village Green,” Mayor David R. Gronbach said.
“Every year the club puts them up at Thanksgiving time, decorates them with multi-colored lights and maintains them until New Year's Day,” the mayor said.
This tradition dates back to 1966 when Walter Schutte, determined to have real Christmas trees on the Green, started collecting funds for their purchase and display.
Since then, the Schutte Memorial Christmas Tree Fund is keeping the tradition going.
Live trees have decorated the Green every year since and have been regularly photographed.
For example, the late Woldemar Neufeld created a block print in 1992, entitled "Festive Lights on the Green."
“A special thank you goes to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Prause for donating the wonderful, big Christmas tree in front of the town hall,” Gronbach said.
