Stephen G. Gereg, 90, was a Senior Center volunteer

Stephen George Gereg, of Gaylordsville, son of the late John and Veronica (Voytko) Gereg, New Milford, died at The Kent, Feb. 2, 2010, on his 90th birthday.

Mr. Gereg was born Feb. 2, 1920, in New Milford, where he was a life-long resident.

Mr. Gereg was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army and was promoted to corporal. He served as a medic and carpenter.

He was a schooled carpenter and worked for Ed Dolan for many years, after which he became self-employed.

He was a charter member of the Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department, and helped build the firehouse.

Mr. Gereg was a member of the American Legion, serving as commander and service officer and as a Boy Scout leader of a troop sponsored by the Legion.

From its beginning, he volunteered at the New Milford Senior Center lunches until lunches were brought in from outside. He continued to go to the center four days a week until his confinement at The Kent.

Mr. Gereg was an avid hunter, loved fishing and raised large gardens. He gave away many of the vegetables and flowers he raised.

Mr. Gereg met and married Bertha Noble. They raised three daughters, Claudia (Gereg) Doodick, of Augusta, Maine, Sharmon (Gereg) McKee, of Lakeville, and Heidi (Gereg) Haug, of Kent; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

Calling hours are today (Friday) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at Gaylordsville United Methodist Church.

A military burial will be in the spring at Morningside Cemetery, South Kent Road, Gaylordsville.
