The quest for a trip to Thetford Academy in Vermont remains alive.

The New Milford High School girls' and boys' cross country team both earned their way to state open competition today (Friday), Nov. 5 with their respective performances in last Saturday's state class races at Wickham Park in Manchester.

The top teams from Connecticut's final races, scheduled today over Wickham's five-kilometer course, will make their way Nov. 13 to Thetford Academy for the prestigious New England championship race.

Coach Tom Marks' Green Wave girls kicked home last weekend to a runnerup finish in the state class `LL' field with 151 points, well in arrears of mighty Glastonbury's remarkable 68-point total but easily good enough to outrun several-times state champ Ridgefield and perennial South-West Conference rival Newtown.

Jessica Noteware claimed 19th place in 20:26 to show the way for NMHS teammates Candice Weiss (25th, 20:47), Jennifer Paradiso (32nd, 21:02), Gabby Passarelli (33rd, 21:02), Sofia Amaral (51st, 21:40); Rachel Watson (62nd, 21:53) and Marissa Stumpf (67th, 21:57) in a field of 121 girls.

Coach Chris Bacich's Green Wave boys settled for fourth place in their state class `L' race with 148 points, trailing Bristol Central (71), Darien (86) and South-West Conference foe Pomperaug (89).

Their effort was good enough, however, to move on to the state open thanks to contributions from Nick Grudev (7th, 16:44), Stephen Anderson (24th, 17:26), John Hansell (36th, 17:44), John Perrino (38th, 17:48), Ryan Clarke (43rd, 17:55), Noah Rossiter (52nd, 18:06) and Kevin Ortega (70th, 18:33).
