The United Way of Western Connecticut is seeking sponsors for its 24th annual Back to School Clothing Drive.
The drive provides assistance for families living in New Milford, Kent, Washington, Roxbury, Sherman, Bridgewater and Warren.
Last year, the organization provided backpacks to 334 children in need of help, some seeking assistance for the first time.
Of that number, there was an increase in towns that historically had few, if any, in need.
“Thanks to the generosity of our community, we provided clothing, personal care items and school supplies to children of those families, so they could start the school year like everyone else,” said United Way’s Kathy Thomas.
Sponsors will be given a specific list of items for backpacks and personal care items, and children’s sizes and color preferences will be provided.
Each child will be given one backpack, three pairs of socks, two outfits of fall/winter clothing, three sets of undergarments, one winter jacket, personal care items, one pair of sneakers and school supplies.
Individual and group sponsors are sought.
The approximate cost per child is $250.
Monetary donations are also welcome.
Backpacks will be distributed Aug. 14.
