Warm sunshine and the sweet sounds of string music proved an intoxicating blend July 10 for many hundreds on hand for the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department's annual Pickin' and Fiddlin' Contest.

Musicians as young as age 5 displayed their talents with country and bluegrass sounds at rustic Hurlburt Park along West Apple Lane in Roxbury.

Competitive categories were old-time fiddle, old-time banjo, mandolin, trick and fancy fiddle, finger picking and flat picking guitar, bluegrass banjo and band playoff.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, patrons lounged on blankets and lawn chairs while partaking in picnics and beverages.

Food, refreshments and crafts were also available for purchase as fundraisers for the firefighters.
