To the Editor:
The Woman's Club of Greater New Milford held its 17th annual Teddy Bear Festival June 1.
We would like to thank everyone who came out to support our event on such a beautiful first Saturday in June.
We do our best to have something for the whole family and, in return, your patronage allows us to fund more of the projects that we love, like the library's summer reading program, Loaves & Fishes, the senior center, Harrybrooke Park and our annual scholarships for New Milford High School students.
I, on behalf of the club's board, would like to thank all of our hardworking members, our vendors and all of our volunteer entertainers.
We had Robert Brereton performing on the dulcimer and guitar, and singing. Barbara Hallecks, Martha Bishop and Lauren McClelland Mendoza all came to have story times under the shade of one of the big trees. Studio D managed to make it through a fantastic performance of several dance numbers, even with the heat. The Newtown Juggling Club came and shared juggling with anyone who wanted to try.
An extra special thanks goes to the Water Witch Hose Co. No. 2 for escorting Smokey the Bear to visit us for our fire safety presentation. Smokey arrived in style, with sirens announcing his appearance.
We also received donations to help us make our event happen, many from club members.
H.H. Taylor & Son generously donated its time, helping us with our rental items, not to mention discounting our rental; All-American Waste provided trash cans and removal for the day at no charge; and Big Y made a donation toward our food purchases to provide lunch and snacks throughout the day.
Many of our vendors donated items to provide us with a large table of raffle prizes, making it much easier to sell tickets.
In all, it was a great day.
The Teddy Bear Hospital took care of a lot of plush friends, even repairing a 50-year-old bear's eye. Everyone seemed to enjoy visiting with Smokey the Bear and Water Witch Hose Company No. 2. Most importantly, we were able to get out and share some fun with our community while helping to make it a little better.
So, until the first Saturday in June next year, we thank you.
