POW/MIA group to hold ceremony

The Prisoner of War/Missing In Action Connecticut Forget-Me-Nots group based in New Milford will hold a bell ringing ceremony Jan. 27 at noon.
The ceremony, to be held at St. Francis Xavier parish center on Elm Street -- near the top of the Green in New Milford -- will mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement, a document to end active involvement in Vietnam.
At the time, then President Nixon promised the nation that all American prisoners of war would be returned to the United States within ninety days.
Five hundred ninety-one POWs were repatriated during Operation Homecoming from February through March 1973.
Even though the resolution of this issue was considered to be of the highest national priority during the Reagan administration of the 1980s, many families continue to wait for closure today.
Interested residents are encouraged to bring a handbell and gather at 11:45 a.m.
