She was born Dec. 21, 1916, in New Milford, daughter of the late Frank and Petronilla Russo Nicola. She was the seventh of eight children.
A graduate of New Milford High School, Class of 1935, she worked in New York when the war started. She and her husband returned to Connecticut to work at Bridgeport Brass.
After the war, they moved to Newtown, where she was a telephone operator for 30 years. She also started a home sewing business and worked at the election polls for 20 years.
At 62, she moved to Nunnawauk Meadows, where she lived for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Gifford was a member of the Eastern Stars and Church of Jesus Christ.
The Lillis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was in the family plot.
