Bearclaw’s Academy of Music in New Milford will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a special event March 5 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

The event, which is open to the public, will feature student and teacher recitals, food and non-alcoholic beverages and an instrument donation drive.

Joseph “Bearclaw” Burcaw opened the music academy, located at 39 Park Lane Road (Route 202), Unit 4, last February.

The academy offers private lessons in all orchestral instruments, percussion and vocals, music therapy, and master classes and workshops.

A drum circle meets the first and last Saturday of each month from 2 to 3 p.m., and a Bearclaw’s After Dark Music Showcase, a coffeehouse-themed alternative musical showcase featuring local musicians, is regularly held.

In addition, space is available to rent for bands, musicians and teachers for rehearsals and instruction.

Burcaw, a 1990 graduate of New Milford High School, was the bassist for the Irish rock band Black 47 for almost a decade and taught music for 20 years, most recently at the School of Rock in Boston, before opening the music academy.

The band amicably disbanded in 2014 and Burcaw moved back to the area to be closer to family.
