Marie Downey, 90, died July 24, 2010, at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford. She had fought cancer for more than 50 years.
She was born April 4, 1920, in Lafayette La., the daughter of Leonce and Marie (Rodin) Gladu.
During World War II, Mrs. Downey joined the Army as a WACC and served from 1943 to 1946, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.
She received the American Theater Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct and Victory and WAAC ribbons.
She met her husband, the late John F. Downey Sr., while in the service. They couple was married for more than 50 years and raised three children in Bayside, Queens, N.Y.
Mrs. Downey loved to explore, fish, go to the beach and spend time with her family and friends.
Her undefeatable spirit was an inspiration to those who knew her. Her wit and joy of life put a smile on everyone's face.
Mrs. Downey is survived by a daughter, Cathy Adler; a son-in law, Joe Adler; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Adler. She was predeceased by two sons, John F. Downey Jr., who was killed in action in Vietnam, and Richard P. Downey; two sisters, Minnie and Emily; and three brothers, John, Alphonse, and Louie.
A private family service will be held.
The Lillis Funeral Home of New Milford was in charge of arrangements.
