James Mitchell, 29, was charged with first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and tampering with evidence after the incident early today on Angel Drive, Waterbury police Lt. Chris Corbett said.
He was charged in connection with the death of 37-year-old Eric Moore, police said.
Mitchell had been involved in a dispute late Thursday evening with a group of men in the neighborhood, and later retrieved a shotgun from his vehicle to confront them, Corbett said.
Moore tried to stop his friend, but the shotgun fired one round as they struggled over it and Moore was struck in the torso, Corbett said. Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mitchell was being held today on $1 million bond.
