State police said a girl identified as 16-year-old Maria Sanchez Montoya of Mahopac, N.Y., drowned Sunday afternoon near Bulls Bridge in Kent.

Police reported Ms. Montoya was swimming with her 15-year-old sister in the Housatonic River swimming area known as Bulls Bridge Pond, south of the covered bridge, when both girls began struggling in the water.

Her sister was able to get to shore, police said, but Ms. Montoya was caught under the murky water.

Lt. J. Paul Vance said Litchfield County dispatch received several 911 calls about 6 p.m. to report the incident. Firefighters from Kent and Gaylordsville responded to the call.

About 90 minutes later, the Goshen dive team pulled the girl to land, Vance said. They were unable to revive her.

The death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
