Jennifer Lawson, a junior biotechnology and economics major at Syracuse University, has been selected as the university's 2013 Beckman Scholar.

The highly competitive program, funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, supports select students interested in chemistry, biochemistry and the biological and medical sciences.

Beckman Scholars are fully funded for laboratory research.

Lawson, a 2010 graduate of New Milford High School, for the last two years has been researching the genetic and molecular mechanisms regulating plant-pest interactions, directed by Dr. Ramesh Raina.

She is interested in developing anti-parasite medication and disease-resistant plants.

Lawson is a member of the Renee Crown University honors program and has been designated as a Crown Scholar.
