[Editor’s Note: The following is an open letter to members of the Board of Directors of the Merryall Center and members of New Milford’s Commission on the Arts from Neil Silberblatt of the Voices of Poetry.]

I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks to the the Merryall Center and to the New Milford Commission on the Arts for hosting and sponsoring, respectively, our July 25 Voices of Poetry event at the Merryall Center in New Milford.

Thanks to the arts commission's generous support, that event, which would otherwise have been $25 per person, was free.

The Merryall Center boasts a rich history, and has been home to such luminaries as the great contralto, Marian Anderson, and the actor, Fredric March.

It is only fitting, at long last, it should be home to award-winning poets.

I hope the 50-plus people who attended the event, filling the house, put to rest any concerns as to whether people would turn out for events such as this.

They will, and they do.

Thanks also to the Merryall Center and the arts commission for supporting literary events such as this. They are such a vital part of the lifeblood of any community.
