To the Editor:

In the spirit of the holiday season, a group of accomplished poets and writers and talented musicians gathered Nov. 15 at our third annual Voices of Poetry/Thanks for the Giving event at the parish hall of St. John's Episcopal Church in New Milford.

They gathered to offer their words, voices and music in support of the good work done by the volunteers at Loaves & Fishes Hospitality House on behalf of the poor and less fortunate in the Greater New Milford community.

As a result of the generosity of those attending, which sadly did not include Mayor Patricia Murphy or any members of the Town Council, we raised $1,300, every cent of which went to Loaves & Fishes.

The poets and musicians read and performed for free.

Many thanks go to the following poets and writers for reading so beautifully: Richard Close, Kristen DeVoe, Juleyka Lantigua-Williams, David K. Leff, Reggie Marra, James Scrimgeour and Susan Tuz.

Thanks also to the following musicians for sharing their considerable talents: Duane Andrews, John Bolster, Christopher Ellis, Eric Gatten, Lynn Henderson, Donald P. Hicks, Mike Latini, Don Lowe, Hank Milligan, Paul Underwood and Sarah Folstrom Zamudio.

Thanks to the following:

Rev. Jack Gilpin and the parishioners of St. John's Episcopal Church for graciously hosting the event without asking for so much as a nickel to use the church's parish hall;

The 65 people who attended and contributed to Loaves & Fishes; and, most importantly,

Lisa Martin, president of Loaves & Fishes, and all the men, women and occasionally children who volunteer seven days a week, 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, to prepare, cook and serve hot, nutritious meals for their less fortunate neighbors in the community.

If you were unable to attend this event or would simply like to support the good work done by those volunteers, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to "Loaves & Fishes Hospitality House" by going to www.loavesandfishesofnewmilford.org/donations.php.

On behalf of all the poets and musicians who read and performed, we wish everyone all the blessings of the holiday season.
