The Julia's Wings Foundation will kick off its fundraising efforts Oct. 27 at the Pumpkin Run in Kent.

JWF was founded by the Malsin family following the loss of their daughter, Julia, 13, who was big sister to Alyssa, after a yearlong battle against aplastic anemia, a rare bone marrow failure disease.

Individuals are invited to join the JWF team in an effort to raise $20,000.

JWF is a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to families of children with life-threatening hematological diseases and to medical professionals for health-care research.

In addition, JWF seeks to promote the advancement of research for aplastic anemia through contributions to organizations and individuals dedicated to the endeavor.

Festivities begin with a kids' Fun Run at 11:15 a.m., followed by a five-mile run/walk at noon.

The USATF-certified course begins at Kent Town Hall with live music, refreshments and more.

To join the team, participants are asked to raise a minimum of $40, although many team members have set their goal at a higher amount.
