Josephine Teresa (Broderick) McGivney died peacefully Aug. 2, 2010, after a short illness, two days before her 86th birthday. She was the wife of the late Peter H. McGivney.

Mrs. McGivney was born Aug. 4, 1924, in Manhattan, New York, N.Y., daughter of the late Daniel Broderick and Johanna (Holland) Broderick, who had immigrated from Ireland.

Mrs. McGivney was a graduate of Bronx Vocational School and early on worked for Equitable Life in Manhattan.

She made homes in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, including for the last 20 years in Danbury.

She was a homemaker, raising five children and working primarily in sales, retiring from Grolier in 1988.

She was the mother of five children, Vincent McGivney, of Cromwell, Patricia Cascio, and her husband, Rich, of East Hampton, Robert McGivney, and his wife, Denise, of New Milford, Maureen Altermatt, and her husband, Tom, of New Milford, JoAnne Ames, and her husband, Dennis.

Mrs. McGivney was the grandmother of eight, Jonathan, Kathryn and Alexa Cascio, Kevin and Anthony Altermatt, Devon and Nolan Ames, and Latoya Egbert.

She is also survived by a sister, Francis Nichtern, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Daniel Broderick and David Broderick, as well as an infant brother, John Broderick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today (Friday) at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church on Main Street in Danbury. Interment will follow in St. Peter Cemetery.

The Green Funeral Home of Danbury is in charge of arrangements.
