James A. Palmer, 76, of South Kent Road, Kent, died April 5, 2010, at New Milford Hospital. He was the husband of Doris (Peterson) Palmer for 54 years.

Mr. Palmer was born Oct. 11, 1933, in Flushing, N.Y., the son of the late Alva and Mary (Jenkins) Palmer.

He was a 1955 graduate of RPI with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Mr. Palmer served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1963. For 30 years, he was a pilot for the Wayfarer Ketch Corporation, flying airplanes around the world.

He was an active member of his community, devoting his second career to his friends and neighbors. He served on the board of directors for the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging and the Kent Community Fund, taught computer skills to seniors at the New Milford Senior Center and was a volunteer driver for FISH.

He served many years on the Kent Board of Finance and the Kent Planning and Zoning Board.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Palmer is survived by two sons, James A. Palmer Jr,, and his wife, Karen, of New City, N.Y., and Scott Palmer, of Cornwall; a daughter, Kathy Brown, and her husband, Winn, of New Fairfield; five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Christopher, Melaney, Jessica and Jennifer; and a brother, Charles, of Bennington, Vt. He was predeceased by a son, Douglas; a brother, Burr Palmer; and a sister, Isabelle Hoag.

The Kenny Funeral Home of Sharon was in charge of arrangements.
