The long hot summer in Greater New Milford will get even warmer in coming weeks for the many hundreds active in New Milford Parks & Recreation's men's and women's slowpitch softball leagues.
Regular-season action should wind down next week at Young's Field and Pettibone School, depending on the need for rain makeups.
That will set the stage for the nailbiting time of year called the playoffs to determine the various divisional champions.
Thirty-one men's teams and nine women's squads have been battling it out since late April in quest of playoff qualification.
At stake starting next week will be the women's championship and five men's division titles. If the current schedule is maintained, the first playoff games would be played next Thursday, Aug. 2.
Championships are expected to be determined by mid-August, pending the mood of Mother Nature.
