There were days this spring the Shepaug Valley School baseball team prompted memories of past great Spartan powers.

And then there were days coach Scott Werkhoven’s team played, well, less efficiently.

The bottom line for a topsy-turvy regular season was an apt 10-10 record.

The inconsistent performance might not have been what coach Werkhoven and his players wished, but it was good enough to qualify the Region 12 diamond ‘9’ for the state class ‘S’ tournament.

The 22nd-seeded Spartans were ousted, 9-1, by 11th-seeded Old Lyme in a June 3 playdown game.

In retrospect, coach Werkhoven felt gratified by his experience with the 2015 Shepaug squad.

"We started slowly," he said, "but the kids rebounded nicely, winning four games in four days in one stretch. Then we hovered around .500 the rest of the season."

"We had a difficult time finding the consistency we would have liked," he explained. "Although we may not have finished how we had hoped, we are fortunate to have a good group of kids on the team."

Coach Werkhoven especially noted the efforts of his four seniors — Christian Stuart, Logan Racz, Sam Krebs and Travis Fitch.

"We appreciate their contributions to the baseball team," he concluded, "and to Shepaug, and we wish them the best."
