The New Milford Homeless Shelter Coalition Inc. is in the first month of its 14th winter season.

It will conduct a homeless vigil Dec. 21 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. on the south end of the Village Green.

The vigil will recognize the need within the New Milford community to extend neighborly compassion and aid to individuals or families who find themselves homeless.

The 21st is significant because it is the longest night of the year, symbolizing the dark and lonely struggle some residents are experiencing.

The homeless shelter doors opened Nov. 17 at St. Francis Xavier Church on Whittlesey Avenue.

Check-in time for guests is between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m. each night.
