A benefit for the Donald Hassiak Memorial Fund is planned Sunday, Aug. 15 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Matteo's Restaurant at 122 Litchfield Road in New Milford.

Officer Hassiak, a Danbury police officer and New Milford resident who was killed in a hit-and-run accident this summer as he was riding his bicycle to work, is survived by a wife and three young sons.

All proceeds will go to the family.

Jermaine Gage at Matteo is coordinating the event. "The three boys came in (to the restaurant) with Nick Minucci," Mr. Gage said. "Meeting them just filled my heart."

Mr. Gage said the event, which will be held both inside and outside the restaurant, will include a pig roast, buffet, games and raffles.

"People can ... spend time outside, where we'll have a dunk tank and probably an inflatable for the kids to jump around in," Mr. Gage said.

"They can come have a sit-down dinner inside, where the whole staff is volunteering," he noted. "Any tips will be part of the proceeds going to the family. Staff members from other area restaurants are coming to volunteer, too."

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids, including the pig roast, buffet and soda. There will be stations with other treats for sale, such as cotton candy and popcorn, to benefit the Hassiak fund, Mr. Gage said.

Raffle tickets are available now at Matteo's for a variety of prizes.

Magenta, Nationwide and Creative Touch Hair Salon near the restaurant have agreed to let their parking lots be used by people attending the benefit.
