New Milford Visiting Nurse & Hospice's Nurturing Families Network has joined with Literacy Volunteers on the Green to help local parents explore books with their children.
Family Read sessions are held weekly at New Milford VNA and combine reading, listening, writing, speaking, sharing and art to promote children's interest in reading.
Family Read, which is funded by the CT Community Foundation and the Savings Bank of Danbury, is organized around five universal child development themes: expressing needs and feelings, self possibilities, understanding what families value, sharing and cooperating, and establishing independence.
Many of the books in the curriculum have been translated into Spanish.
New Milford VNA & Hospice has been affiliated with Nurturing Families Network since 2007.
The aim of this program, sponsored by the State of Connecticut Children's Trust Fund, is to help ensure that all first-time parents, particularly those facing the greatest challenges, receive the support and education they need to become the best parents they can be.
Services through this program may begin in the last trimester of pregnancy and can continue through the first five years of life.
Assistance during this critical time can enable parents to establish healthy family relationships, improve child development and health, and reduce the risk of abuse and neglect.
