The grants are administered by the state Office of Policy and Management.
The grant would pay for video equipment to videotape interrogations conducted at the police department. Such videotaping will be required by federal law starting in 2013.
The police department has video cameras in place in the holding cells, the halls and outside of the building.
Surveillance images are projected into the dispatchers' room.
Mayor Pat Murphy said the videotaping of interrogations is both for the safety of the party being interviewed and the police officers conducting the interviews.
